The first vegan pie & mash shop in London! Exciting stuff, no?
Last Saturday, I thew myself into the bustle of Camden Lock to get my pie based eat on.
The menu was full of pastry covered temptresses. It was a tough choice. Seitan and Ale Pie sounded like a classic so I went for that – Home made Seitan in a Sweet Ale Beer. He came with a cheeky dollop of mash, fried onion bits, a nice big ladle of gravy, and some peppery leaves.
Chilling in the triumph of a pastry casing were big chunky morsels of seitan covered in a rich, flavourful boozy blanket. The mash was smooth and buttery. I’m such a fussy one when it comes to gravy, I always get Simon to make it at home because he’s the gravy king. Simon better watch his crown because YV’s gravy was incredible. The fried onion bits added a little sprinkle of fun.
Ludz had the All Day Breakfast Pie – Scrambled Tofu, Smokey Baked Beans, Vegan Sausages and Caramelised Onion. It came with the same same mash, onion and gravy sidekicks but he opted for no leaves because he’s naughty and doesn’t eat his health.
This pie is fresh out of the Rage Against The Machine School of ‘Fuck You I Won’t Do What You Tell Me’. Basically, screw your breakfast time restriction ‘cos this bad boy can be enjoyed all day long.
My dad always says ‘you cannot knock beans’ and I’m inclined to agree, beans are life. These beans in particular were super smoky and seductive. The tofu scramble pieces were like little clouds of dreams carrying the tasty sausage pieces to deliver a whole mouthful of happiness.
I could write a serious TL;DR post about the joys of this pie. Maybe a novel.
‘Dirty Vegazine’s Young Vegan Pie Tales’ coming soon to a Waterstones near you.
Sounds a bit Mills and Boon.
As I walked out of the shop a random girl said ‘These are the best pies in London’.
I wholeheartedly agree.
These damn fine sons of bakers are 100% THE BEST pies I’ve ever eaten. ⚡
