Famous for stottie cakes, the most friendly accent in the world, Gazza, the BEST Bridges, the Angel of the North, Ant & Dec, the windscreen wiper (fun fact for you there) aaaaaaand Dirty Vegazine!
Simo and I were born and raised close to the Toon, and lived 5 minutes apart in a small town called Ryton. Since both of our families are still up North we headed back for Christmas and were very excited to see what vegan delights Gerodieland has to offer.

First up, The Bohemian is a pretty chilled Veggie/Vegan restaurant close to Central Station. Perfect for when you arrive after a 3 hour train journey where your only food options were ready salted crisps (again) and a banana (if you’re lucky).
Simon went for the ‘Meat’ Feast – ‘Sausage’ slices, ‘Pepperoni’ and Smoky ‘Bacon.
Had to nab myself a slice and it was pretty tasty! Simo thought the pizza was reet good – it got a little too cheesy towards the end – but he’d definitely text it for a second date.
I had the burger (obvs). Black Bean and Walnut Cheese burger in fact – topped with Melted Cheese, Mixed Leaves, Onion Rings, Ketchup & Mustard served in a Toasted Bun with skinny Fries & Slaw on the side.
He was an exciting little stack! Nice burger, piled high with onion rings with his good mates slaw and the fry guys in tow.
The menu was huge and there’s loads that I want to try so will definitely be getting my butt back to the Bohemian next time I’m up North!

This place was a great little find for stocking up on vegan essentials and bagging a cheeky little snack on the way. I grabbed a jar of Tyne Cheese (absolutely crackin’ btw), some Violife Halloumi and Vegan Egg (odd stuff).
Also, scored my self a cheeky sausage roll that had JUST came out of the oven. The ‘sausage’ was less solid than a Lindy type – more like a creamed filling. Still really tasty though.

Not a vegan place, but we went for a cheeky little roast and I was pretty surprised to find vegan options on the menu.
I had a stuffed aubergine with all the veg and gravy – sadly no roast potatoes though which made me do a little cry.
They also had a vegan chocolate and coconut milk torte which I didn’t try but it sounded like dreams.

Newcastle’s first vegan pub! Don’t expect the same old pub fare though, the menu is varied and a bit worldy. Ludz had just arrived to join the Toon party so we decided to check this baby out.
I spied a plate of the Loaded Nachos as I walked in and decided there and then that I needed them in my life. We ordered the sharer – Paprika Nachos topped with Cheeze Sauce Guac, jalapeños and Sour Cream.
These bright young things were an absolute triumph for me. Loved the queso so much and couldn’t stop jamming the little triangles of happiness into my greedy little face.
Ludz had ‘The Lucky Fish n Chips’ – Marinated Tofu wrapped in a Nori Seaweed, coated in a light batter with Crushed Minty Peas, Chunky Chips & Homemade Tartare Sauce.
The tofish was a joy and the chips were chunky and satisfying. It was actually the inspiration for my Tofish & Chips recipe!
Simo and I both went for the Aloha Teriyaki Burger – Soy and Teriyaki infused Pattie with crushed Sunflower, Pumpkin & Linseed topped with a Griddled Pineapple Ring, Lettuce, Tomato, Pickles and a house sauce. Served with hand cut Chunky Chips and Rainbow Cous Cous.
I thought it was great – loved the teriyaki flavour plus the sheer girth of it. Simon was feeling a bit ropey at the time so wasn’t quite as prepared to take on the beast.
All in all, a canny place for a bite and a pint!
